A Letter from Our President

Community Relief Network volunteers and community members gathered together

As I sit down to write this letter, I find myself overwhelmed by the magnitude of what we have accomplished together in 2025. When Community Relief Network first began its work in Durham Region and the Greater Toronto Area, we were a small group of volunteers with a simple conviction: that no one in our community should go hungry, feel forgotten, or face hardship alone. This year, that conviction carried us further than I ever imagined possible.

In twelve short months, CRN has distributed over 2,400 food hampers to families across the GTA, delivered more than 500 dignity kits to women and girls in need, and launched our Elderly Outreach program, which now provides regular companionship visits to seniors living in isolation. These are not just numbers on a page. Each hamper represents a family sitting down to a warm meal. Each dignity kit represents a young woman who can attend school with confidence. Each visit represents a senior who knows that someone cares.

The People Behind the Mission

None of this would be possible without you. Our volunteers give their weekends, their evenings, and their energy to this work. Our donors contribute with extraordinary generosity, often giving from their own modest means because they believe in what we are building. Our community partners open their doors, share their resources, and amplify our reach. To every single one of you: thank you. You are the backbone of this organization, and your commitment to serving others is what makes CRN more than a charity. It makes us a movement.

I want to be transparent about the challenges we face. Food insecurity in the GTA continues to rise. The cost of living is pushing more families to the brink than ever before. The need is growing faster than our capacity, and that reality weighs heavily on me. But when I walk into our packing facility on a Saturday morning and see forty volunteers working side by side, sorting groceries and writing handwritten notes of encouragement to tuck into each hamper, I know that we are building something powerful enough to meet this moment.

Looking Ahead to 2026

In the year ahead, we plan to expand our food relief program into new neighbourhoods across Brampton and Scarborough, double the number of dignity kits we distribute through our school partnerships, and establish a dedicated seniors program that goes beyond companionship visits to include wellness checks and connection to essential services. These are ambitious goals, but ambition is what this community deserves.

Thank you for walking this road with us. Thank you for believing that compassion is not a luxury but a necessity. I am proud to serve as your president, and I am honoured to carry this mission forward with you into 2026. Together, we will continue to build a community where no one is left behind.

With gratitude and determination,
Omar Elsherif
