Volunteer Spotlight: How Team Durham Makes It Happen
Every Saturday morning at 7:00 a.m., while most of Durham Region is still asleep, a group of dedicated volunteers arrives at our staging facility in Oshawa. They pull on gloves, tie back their hair, and get to work. By the time they leave in the early afternoon, hundreds of families will have fresh groceries, pantry staples, and culturally appropriate foods packed and ready for delivery. This is Team Durham, and they are the heartbeat of Community Relief Network's food relief operations in the region.
The team is made up of people from every walk of life. There are university students balancing coursework with a desire to give back, retirees who bring decades of organizational experience, working parents who carve out time from their busy schedules, and newcomers to Canada who understand firsthand what it means to need a helping hand. What unites them is not their background but their shared belief that community care is a responsibility, not an afterthought.
A Well-Oiled Machine
The weekly routine has been refined over months of practice. The first shift handles intake and sorting, organizing donated goods by category and checking expiration dates. The second shift takes over assembly, building hampers tailored to family size and dietary needs. A final team handles quality checks and loading, ensuring every hamper meets CRN's standards before it leaves the facility. Coordination is tight, communication is constant, and the energy in the room is unmistakable. There is laughter, music, and a sense of shared purpose that turns hard physical work into something that feels like family.
Team leads rotate monthly, giving volunteers the opportunity to develop leadership skills and take ownership of different parts of the operation. This structure has created a deep bench of experienced organizers who can step into any role on any given Saturday. It also means that when life gets in the way and someone cannot make it, the team adapts without missing a beat. That resilience is what allows CRN to maintain consistency week after week, delivering on our promise to the families who depend on us.
More Than a Shift
Ask any Team Durham volunteer why they keep coming back, and the answer is rarely about the work itself. It is about the connections they have built with each other and with the community they serve. Several volunteers have described their Saturday shifts as the most meaningful part of their week. For many, CRN has become a second family, a place where they feel valued, supported, and part of something larger than themselves.
We are always looking for new volunteers to join Team Durham. Whether you can commit to a regular weekly shift or only have time for occasional support, there is a place for you here. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to show up and a heart for service. If you are ready to be part of something extraordinary, we would love to welcome you to the team.
